Battlestate Games, the developer of Escape from Tarkov, has revised its decision regarding an exclusive PvE mode initially locked behind a €300 Unheard Edition. The move came after significant backlash from players, particularly those who previously purchased the End of Darkness (EoD) edition. Battlestate clarified that this PvE mode is not considered DLC, as their definition of DLC includes major game additions released post-launch as themed packs, like the upcoming Scav Life DLC.
Nikita Buyanov, COO of Battlestate Games, explained that the PvE mode operates on a separate server infrastructure, which currently cannot support all EoD edition holders. However, responding to player dissatisfaction, they have pledged to offer this mode for free to EoD owners once the game fully launches and the required server capacity is met, though this could take years as the mode is still in early access.
In the interim, players interested in early access to the PvE mode without upgrading to the Unheard Edition will need to purchase access, though EoD owners will receive a substantial 70% discount. Additionally, players who have already upgraded from EoD to Unheard at the original price will be compensated with a free Left Behind Edition key.
This decision has continued to stir controversy among the community, with many players disputing Battlestate's stance that the new mode does not constitute DLC. The general sentiment is that a completely new game mode, which introduces significant changes, should be considered a major addition irrespective of how the company classifies it.
Battlestate's amendment to its policy reflects an ongoing dialogue with its player base, aiming to balance company capabilities with player expectations and satisfaction.
